Mrs. Winda N. Bounds was staying in the New Mexico home of her son, David Bounds, and his wife, Tanya, when she passed away on Sunday, June 17, 2018, at approximately 7 p.m. Mountain Standard Time.
Visitation will be at Temple Baptist Church in Mexia, on Saturday, June 23 at noon. The funeral will be performed by Pastor Michael Vestal at 1 p.m. in Temple Baptist Church, with interment at Fort Parker Cemetery directly following the service.
Winda was preceded in death by her husband, George Bounds, her father, mother, several brothers and several sisters. She is survived by her twin sister, Wanda Beaver; her youngest brother, Douglas Nichols; her sisters-in-law, LaSonda Varnnum and Stacia Daniels; her oldest son, Chip Bounds, and his wife, Sandra, and her youngest son, David Bounds, and his wife, Tanya; her grandsons, Joshua Bounds and James Bounds; her granddaughters, Katie Bounds, Elizabeth Bounds and Victoria Bounds; and numerous nephews and nieces.
Winda was born in Sweetwater, on Nov. 24, 1929, to Edward and Lottie Nichols. She was the younger of twin girls, with her twin sister’s name being Wanda. As one of the middle daughters of a large cotton-farming family, she grew up learning to value family and hard work. In 1947, she graduated from high school in Floyd. Winda Nichols joined the U.S. Army, serving from October 1952 to September 1954. Part of her time in the service was spent as a finance clerk for the Army in Yokohama, Japan. Upon completion of her term of service, Winda returned to Texas and attended Sul Ross State College in Alpine, and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Education. Winda was teaching and coaching at Ysleta High School in Sierra Blanca, when she met George Bounds Jr. They were married in 1959 and within a few years had two sons; George III born in 1960 and David born in 1961. As a military wife, she lived in various states across the United States, including Alaska, New York and Arizona. Most of her career was spent as a teacher and counselor in the public school system. She lived with an abiding faith in Jesus Christ and served others with strength, perseverance and compassion.
Winda and her husband, George, were residents of the Mexia area for many years and were active members of Temple Baptist Church and First Baptist Church. She served as a Sunday school teacher for many years and did a lot of volunteer work in the community.
In lieu of flowers please make donations to Christian missionary work of your choice in memory of Winda Bounds.
Pallbearers will be James Bounds, Jerry Cummings, Jerry Thomas, Danny Cummings, Tirey Varnnum, Gerald Curtis, and Paul Yeldell.
